DIY Dip Dyed Shorts

Alright, I've recently posted my diy dip dyed shorts on instagram and since everyone won't stop asking me this and that, I've decided to blog about it. Yes, there's hundreds of blog posts and videos on youtube but they're not detailed enough so I'm gonna talk about all the details. Enjoy!

Q: What did you dye your shorts with? Where did you get it?
A: Dylon Fabric Dye. Its a black small plastic pack. People in Australia and Singapore, you can get it from Spotlight. For Kuala Lumpur, you can get it from Art Friend, Gardens Mall. ANY FABRIC DYE WILL DO and i think you can get them from any craft shop.

Q: How much did you get the fabric dyes for?
A: In Australia I bought it for AUD12.95, for Malaysia my friend bought it for RM10.90.

Q: What about the colours?
A: About the colours, I strongly recommend you to buy 3 colours like Magenta, Yellow and Blue. So you can mix magenta and yellow for orange, magenta and blue for purple, blue and yellow for green. You don't have to waste money buying a pack of purple. Buying these 3 colours is like having 6 colours. For me I bought Flamingo Pink, Sunflower Yellow and Bahama Blue.

Q: How do you use the fabric dye?
A: Well, there are instructions behind the package and its very complicated written. Let me summarize it. Pour out your fabric dye powder and add WARM water so that it dissolves well, add a bit of salt and mix it. That easy!

Q: How many dye should I use? How many water should I add?
A: Its hard to estimate for you or describe but I can say not too little just try to see like its not too watery? As deep as possible but you don't have to finish the whole pack. I used just like around 1 and a half teaspoon for one colour (for one small ombre part).

Q: Anything I need to be aware of?
A: Make sure you wear gloves! And dissolve ALL of the fabric dye powder when mixing if not the powder will stick on your pants and it will be very ugly.

Q: How to dye more than 1 colour?
A: No, you do not  have to wait till the first colour to dry to dye your second colour.

Q: How long do I have to leave my pants with the colour?
A: I don't think you need to leave it for a very long time. Around 15 minutes will do.

Q: What about bleaching my pants?
A: Try to bleach your pants before dying them, unless its white or very light in colour, cause the colours will definitely be sharper if dyed on a white surface. Bleach with any brand of bleach and make sure you wash THOROUGHLY after bleaching so that the fabric dye wont be bleached out.

Q: How long do I have to bleach my pants?
A: Till the pants become the colour you want. I think mine took around 30-45 minutes.

Q: After dying?
A: Place your pants horizontally just like that picture below so the colours won't go down or drip off.

Q: How do I tug my pants?
A: I used just a pair of scissor and yes it do takes a lot of time and strength.

Q: American flag shorts?
A: You can create stripes using any brush/roller/toothbrush.

Q: Additional stuffs?
A: Add on studs if you want anything extra. You can get them in bulk from ebay and its very cheap.
